How to Pick the Best Handyman Service near Piedmont Alabama

Piedmont AL handyman servicesHiring a handyman in Piedmont AL can be an affordable alternative to doing various home repair or improvement projects yourself that you have been avoiding.  With multiple family and work responsibilities, it can often be difficult to work on your list of home repairs, which can have a negative impact on home maintenance.  A handyman is usually less expensive than licensed contractors who specialize in one area exclusively, such as plumbers or electricians.  And with their extensive and broad experience, they can help you avoid making mistakes when installing a washing machine, replacing a garbage disposal, or putting in a new tile floor yourself.  There is nothing more frustrating than having to hire someone to re-do the job after you have done it very badly.  Also, it can end up being more expensive than if you had hired a professional to begin with.   So, if you are considering doing some home renovations or fixing something in the house that needs repair, consider the benefits of hiring a professional handyman instead.

Why Hire a Handyman Instead?

  • Charge by the hour. Most handymen in Piedmont AL charge by the hour and not by the job.  This means that you only pay for the time spent doing actual work and not pre-set service charges plus additional costs that could far exceed what a handyman charges.   They also tend to have lower overhead and no employees, so they can charge less than a typical plumber or electrician.
  • Can handle several projects. Perhaps you have a faucet that needs replacing, an outlet that needs to be changed out, and a bedroom that needs to be painted.  Instead of trying to find and coordinate with a reliable Piedmont AL plumber, electrician and painter, an experienced handyman can handle all of those projects.
  • Save money on materials. When you hire a contractor, generally they supply the materials at a mark-up.  When working with a handyman, you supply the materials, saving you money.  And often an experienced handyman has connections that they have established with Piedmont AL vendors offering them discounts that they can pass on to their customers.
  • The Go-To person for all home repair projects. The great thing about having the phone number for an experienced Piedmont AL professional handyman is that you don’t have to think about who to call when the toilet leaks or the ceiling fan stops working.  You just call your guy (or gal) and they come over and take care of the problem.  And if the job is a little more involved than they can handle, they can usually recommend a “specialist” to take care of your more advanced plumbing, electrical or HVAC needs.

Steps to Hiring a Handyman

  • Interview several prospects. As the song goes, you better shop around.  Be sure to speak with 3 or 4 candidates before making a selection.  Referral services, such as the one recommended on this website, can do the groundwork for you by providing pre-screened Piedmont AL handymen.  Be sure to ask about their experience, areas of expertise and rates.
  • Clearly define the project. Make sure your prospective handyman understands the scope and all details of the project.  It is important to make sure that it is within the range of his or her expertise and experience and not more appropriate for a licensed Piedmont AL contractor.
  • Ask for references. Get references from recent Piedmont AL customers who have used the handyman’s services, for similar projects if available.  Ask if they were completely satisfied with the work performed as well as the cost of services.  Also ask if they would hire the handyman again for future projects.
  • Get Agreement and Guarantee in writing. Make sure the terms are spelled out in writing, to include all fees involved and any guarantees for workmanship.  Since you are paying by the hour it is not as critical to get the exact project cost up front, especially for small jobs.  But there needs to be a formal understanding regarding hourly rate and if the Piedmont AL handyman stands behind his work.  And for longer projects, a start and completion date, along with estimated billed hours should be spelled out in writing before work begins.

Looking for a Handyman in Piedmont AL?

If you live in the Piedmont Alabama area and are looking for a reliable and affordable handyman, following is some information about your hometown that you may find interesting and useful.

Piedmont, Alabama

Piedmont is a city in Calhoun and Cherokee counties in the U.S. state of Alabama. The population was 4,878 at the 2010 census.[3] It is included in the Anniston-Oxford, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is approximately one hour and fifteen minutes West of Atlanta, one and a half hours North East of Birmingham, twenty minutes North of Anniston, Alabama and twenty five minutes east of Gadsden, Alabama. The campus of Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama is approximately ten miles South of Piedmont. The city is nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain chain and is surrounded by mountains on the city's southern and eastern sides. The area is home to Duggar Mountain, which is Alabama's second highest point, only trailing Mt. Cheaha by a small margin. Piedmont is a popular tourist destination for outdoor enthusiasts due to its close proximity to many nearby hiking trails, streams and rivers, mountains, the Duggar Mountain Wilderness, the Talladega National Forret and Coleman Lake. Weiss Lake is fourteen miles North of Piedmont and is known as "The Crappie Capital of the World." Piedmont is home to Terrapin Creek, which is a popular destination for kayaking, canoing, camping, swimming and fishing. Piedmont is also home to the Chief Ladiga Trail, which is a paved trail utilized for walking, jogging and bicycling. The trail runs through downtown Piedmont and runs all the way to Atlanta to the East and to Anniston, Alabama to the South and West. The city's school system is an award winning and nationally recognised education system. The school system has state of the art facilities, including artificial turf on the football field and an indoor practice facility for the football team, which is also utilized as a community storm shelter. The school systems sports teams have won state championships in football, track and field and wrestling and have won numerous area/region championships in men/women's basketball, baseball, softball and men's golf. Two state highways, AL-9 and AL-21 run through the city limits of Piedmont, as well as US Highway 278. The city and surrounding area is served by the Centre-Piedmont-Cherokee County Regional Airport, which was constructed in 2010. Many surrounding communities are served by the 36272 ZIP code, including Spring Garden, Rock Run, Knighten's Crossroads, and Nance's Creek. The current mayor is Bill Baker, who was chosen by the city council to lead after elected mayor Rick Freeman resigned due to medical issues.

The area now known as Piedmont is a community that began in the early 1840s, located at the crossroads of two early post roads. Major Jacob Forney Dailey of North Carolina came to Alabama in 1848 and bought land in present-day Piedmont. Major Dailey named the area Cross Plains, and an official post office with that name was established on September 22, 1851.

In Reconstruction-era Alabama, an incident at Cross Plains affected race relations and the future of the northeast section of the state for generations as a result of the lynching of William Luke, a northern missionary, and several other men in 1870. In that year, the new northern-owned railroad to connect Washington, D.C. and the North with New Orleans was to have its headquarters near the small northeast Alabama town, at Patona. After the Ku Klux Klan-led lynchings, however, the headquarters was moved, and the town never achieved the dominant position in Calhoun County, with Anniston, founded the next year, achieving that status instead.
