How to Hire the Right Handyman Service near Gardendale Alabama

Gardendale AL handyman servicesHiring a handyman in Gardendale AL can be an affordable alternative to doing various home repair or improvement projects yourself that you have been avoiding.  With multiple family and work responsibilities, it can often be difficult to work on your list of home repairs, which can have a negative impact on home maintenance.  A handyman is usually less expensive than licensed contractors who specialize in one area exclusively, such as plumbers or electricians.  And with their extensive and broad experience, they can help you avoid making mistakes when installing a washing machine, replacing a garbage disposal, or putting in a new tile floor yourself.  There is nothing more frustrating than having to hire someone to re-do the job after you have done it very badly.  Also, it can end up being more expensive than if you had hired a professional to begin with.   So, if you are considering doing some home renovations or fixing something in the house that needs repair, consider the benefits of hiring a professional handyman instead.

Why Hire a Handyman Instead?

Gardendale AL handyman installing cabinetsSometimes it is best to leave it to the experts when considering home maintenance or repair.  A qualified and experienced Gardendale AL handyman can not only get the job done fast but do it right the first time, saving you frustration and time for other obligations.  But what are the benefits of hiring a handyman compared to other options.  Let’s take a look at some of the main reasons that it makes sense to utilize handyman services for your next home project.

  • Charge by the hour. Most handymen in Gardendale AL charge by the hour and not by the job.  This means that you only pay for the time spent doing actual work and not pre-set service charges plus additional costs that could far exceed what a handyman charges.   They also tend to have lower overhead and no employees, so they can charge less than a typical plumber or electrician.
  • Can handle several projects. Perhaps you have a faucet that needs replacing, an outlet that needs to be changed out, and a bedroom that needs to be painted.  Instead of trying to find and coordinate with a reliable Gardendale AL plumber, electrician and painter, an experienced handyman can handle all of those projects.
  • Save money on materials. When you hire a contractor, generally they supply the materials at a mark-up.  When working with a handyman, you supply the materials, saving you money.  And often an experienced handyman has connections that they have established with Gardendale AL vendors offering them discounts that they can pass on to their customers.
  • The Go-To person for all home repair projects. The great thing about having the phone number for an experienced Gardendale AL professional handyman is that you don’t have to think about who to call when the toilet leaks or the ceiling fan stops working.  You just call your guy (or gal) and they come over and take care of the problem.  And if the job is a little more involved than they can handle, they can usually recommend a “specialist” to take care of your more advanced plumbing, electrical or HVAC needs.

Steps to Hiring a Handyman

  • Interview several prospects. As the song goes, you better shop around.  Be sure to speak with 3 or 4 candidates before making a selection.  Referral services, such as the one recommended on this website, can do the groundwork for you by providing pre-screened Gardendale AL handymen.  Be sure to ask about their experience, areas of expertise and rates.
  • Clearly define the project. Make sure your prospective handyman understands the scope and all details of the project.  It is important to make sure that it is within the range of his or her expertise and experience and not more appropriate for a licensed Gardendale AL contractor.
  • Ask for references. Get references from recent Gardendale AL customers who have used the handyman’s services, for similar projects if available.  Ask if they were completely satisfied with the work performed as well as the cost of services.  Also ask if they would hire the handyman again for future projects.
  • Get Agreement and Guarantee in writing. Make sure the terms are spelled out in writing, to include all fees involved and any guarantees for workmanship.  Since you are paying by the hour it is not as critical to get the exact project cost up front, especially for small jobs.  But there needs to be a formal understanding regarding hourly rate and if the Gardendale AL handyman stands behind his work.  And for longer projects, a start and completion date, along with estimated billed hours should be spelled out in writing before work begins.

Looking for a Handyman in Gardendale AL?

If you live in the Gardendale Alabama area and are looking for a reliable and affordable handyman, following is some information about your hometown that you may find interesting and useful.

Gardendale, Alabama

A large farm settlement near the area today known as Gardendale was settled around 1825. Some years later, other settlers began to move into the community commonly known as Jugtown, a name given to the area based on the presence of a large jug and churn factory that operated in the area. Some years later, Hettie Thomason Cargo, a school teacher, would lead a campaign to change the name of the community. In 1906, the name Gardendale was selected, and in 1955, the City of Gardendale was officially incorporated. Today, with more than 13,000 residents (estimated), the city of Gardendale has grown to include more than 400 businesses, 4 schools, and 24 churches.[5]

In 1996, the Olympic torch run passed through the city during the weeks leading up to the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. Before Interstate 65 was constructed, the main route between Nashville, Tennessee and Birmingham, Alabama was U.S. Route 31. Prior to being built as a four-lane road, U.S. 31 was a twisting two-lane road that is still largely visible today. From the north end of Gardendale, it is now Snow Rogers Road, North Road, Moncrief Road, and then Main Street southward through the city to the Fultondale city limit where it becomes Stouts Road. In the fall of 2008, new signs were placed along the original route of Stouts Road through Gardendale denoting its historical significance as a stagecoach route between Tennessee and Birmingham during the 19th century. The first traffic signals in the city were located along U.S. 31 at Tarrant Road, Fieldstown Road, and Moncrief Road as well as Tarrant Road at Pineywood Road. A new signal at the intersection of Fieldstown Road and Main Street near city hall replaced a blinking signal shortly thereafter. Fieldstown Road was a narrow two lane road from U.S. 31 westward until Interstate 65 was built and then Fieldstown Road was re-routed onto the new road in the mid-1980s. An abundance of traffic signals have been erected in the city since those early days. In approximately 1970, the city installed street lights along U.S. 31 from the Fultondale city limits northward to the Moncrief Road intersection. The technology at that time was for blue vapor lights. Today, nearly 40 years later those same blue vapor lights still exist with some being replaced with the more modern bulbs near major intersections. Since 1980, Gardendale has annexed considerable amounts of land on the north, east, and west sides. Much of the eastern area is uninhabited. The western annexation is centered along Fieldstown Road. Most of the newest residential development has been in this area and along Shady Grove Road south of Fieldstown Road. The northern annexation has centered along US 31 and extends nearly 2 miles (3.2 km) farther north than 1980. The city has a working historical society, established January 23, 2006, that is working to record the history of the Gardendale area. They have a museum that is open to the public on Saturday mornings each week. It contains a variety of photographs, documents, and other historical memorabilia from Gardendale.[citation needed]

Gardendale is located at 33°39′36″N 86°48′46″W / 33.66000°N 86.81278°W / 33.66000; -86.81278 (33.6601033, -86.8127702).[1] According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.0 square miles (47 km2), all land. However, with the recent annexation of several thousand acres from the community of Mt. Olive and other unincorporated areas, the city now has an estimated total area of around 25.0 square miles (65 km2). Gardendale is situated along one of the three major transportation corridors from the Midwest to the Gulf Coast (I-75, I-65, I-55). A tremendous volume of freight (via rail and truck) passes through or near Gardendale.
